Cary Elwes shared that Tom Cruise crashed a car on his first day of filming Days of Thunder

Cary Elweswas blown away byTom Cruise’s dedication while filmingDays of Thunder.
The two actors went to extreme lengths to prepare for their roles as race car drivers in the 1990 movie, as they did most of their own stunt driving. Despite countless hours of preparation, Elwes recently toldEntertainment Tonightthat Cruise crashed his car the first day behind the wheel.
“Tom put a car in the wall, actually, on his first day of driving, you know, and these things are not cheap," Elwes said. "And he was so funny on film. His last words before crashing were, ‘Hello, wall.' "
ThePrincess Brideactor went on to say that he “loves” Cruise.
“He's a terrific guy. He really is so fun to work with, so, so professional and so supportive of everybody,” Elwes, 63, shared.
Elwes recalled having to “learn how to drive NASCAR" for the movie.
“The great Tony Scott, who directed the picture — a lovely, awesome man — came up to me on my first day, and he said, 'Okay, here's what you need to do when you get up to speed. I want you to take the wheel with your knees, and then I want you to flip on each of the cameras, grab the wheel again, and then when they're switched on, take the wheel with your knees again, and then clap each camera.’ "
"And I said, ‘You're joking, right?' He goes, ‘No, no, no, that's what we're gonna do.’ And I thought, ‘This is nuts.’ "

In the end, Elwes said, “Of course, I did it."
He noted that it ended up being "great fun" and they "had such a great time.”
In addition to Elwes and Cruise, the action racing film featured Nicole Kidman, Don Simpson, Michael Rooker, John C. Reilly and Randy Quaid.
Kidman and Cruisemet on the set of the movie,marrying the same year the movie was released, beforedivorcing in 2001.
Last year, Kidmanreflected on wearing her naturally curly hairin the film during an interview withAllure.
"I love my hair there. That is my natural hair. Isn't that crazy?" theMoulin Rougeactress said."So, little girls out there, embrace the curl. Do not follow in my steps and straighten your hair."
She noted that it was "very humid" filming in Daytona Beach, Fla., "Thus, I have very wild, curly hair."
